Muons in IceCube
نویسنده
چکیده
Muons with a high transverse momentum (pT ) are produced in cosmic ray air showers via semileptonic decay of heavy quarks and the decay of high pT kaons and pions. These high pT muons have a large lateral separation from the shower core muon bundle. IceCube is well suited for the detection of high pT muons. The surface shower array can determine the energy, core location and direction of the cosmic ray air shower while the in-ice array can reconstruct the energy and direction of the high pT muon. This makes it possible to measure the decoherence function (lateral separation spectrum) at distances greater than 150 meters. The muon pT can be determined from the muon energy (measured by dE/dx) and the lateral separation. The high pT muon spectrum may also be calculated in a perturbative QCD framework; this spectrum is sensitive to the cosmic-ray composition.

IceTop is the surface air shower array above the IceCube [1] neutrino detector. Its primary purpose is to complement the detection of high energy astrophysical neutrinos and support IceCube by identifying background events. To do that IceTop will [2]: 1) Tag a fraction of the small showers on the surface that are associated with the main atmospheric muon background in IceCube. Among the identif...
متن کاملStudying High pT Muons in Cosmic-Ray Air Showers
Most cosmic-ray air shower arrays have focused on detecting electromagnetic shower particles and low energy muons. A few groups (most notably MACRO + EASTOP and SPASE + AMANDA) have studied the high energy muon component of showers. However, these experiments had small solid angles, and did not study muons far from the core. The IceTop + IceCube combination, with its 1 km muon detection area ca...
متن کاملNeutrino Induced Upward Going Muons from a Gamma Ray Burst in a Neutrino Telescope of Km Area
The number of neutrino induced upward going muons from a single gamma ray burst (GRB) expected to be detected by the proposed kilometer scale IceCube detector at the South Pole location has been calculated. The effects of the Lorentz factor, total energy of the GRB emitted in neutrinos and its distance from the observer (redshift) on the number of neutrino events from that GRB have been examine...
متن کاملThe ICECUBE prototype string in AMANDA
The Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) is a high-energy neutrino telescope. It is a lattice of optical modules (OM) installed in the clear ice below the South Pole Station. Each OM contains a photomultiplier tube (PMT) that detects photons of Cherenkov light generated in the ice by muons and electrons. ICECUBE is a cubickilometer-sized expansion of AMANDA currently being built ...
متن کاملGamma Ray Astronomy With IceCube
We demonstrate that the South Pole kilometer-scale neutrino observatory IceCube can detect multi-TeV gamma rays continuously over a large fraction of the southern sky. While not as sensitive as pointing atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes, IceCube can roughly match the sensitivity of Milagro. Also, IceCube is complementary to Milagro because it will observe, without interruption, a relatively poorl...
متن کاملThe Proton Synchrotron Model of TeV Gamma Ray Emission from Gamma Ray Bursts and Their Detectability in AMANDA/ICECUBE Type Detectors
The detectability of a possible “high” energy (> 100GeV) component of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) using AMANDA/ICECUBE type large area muon detectors is examined within the context of a specific model of such high energy gamma ray production within GRBs, namely, the proton-synchrotron model, which requires protons to be accelerated to ultrahigh energies >∼ 1020 eV within GRBs. In this model, the hi...
